What is B12?

Vitamin B12 is needed to form red blood cells and DNA. It also plays a key role in the function and development of brain and nerve cells. Vitamin B12 binds to the protein in the foods we eat. In the stomach, hydrochloric acid and enzymes unbind vitamin B12 into its free form.  A deficiency in B12 can reduce energy and metabolism and disrupt other metabolic activities in the body. 

 

What are the symptoms of low B12?

Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency a pale-yellow tinge to skin, a sore and red tongue (glossitis), mouth ulcers, pins and needles (paresthesia), changes in the body’s movement, disturbed vision, irritability and depression.  In fact, many people are placed on SSRIs or other mood-altering medications prior to testing or treating B12, thyroid function and other deficiencies in the body.
