What is dermal filler and how is it used?

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a natural compound that aids in the production of collagen and elastin.  They work by boosting the skin's supply of hyaluronic acid, revitalizing and adding volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and giving a natural softer look.

Dermal fillers are approved for specific uses in people aged 22 and older. Uses include correcting moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and skin folds. It also includes increasing fullness of lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye hollows, jawline, and back of the hand, contouring.

How long do dermal fillers last

Some dermal fillers last for 6 to 12 months, while other dermal fillers last 2 to 5 years.

Are filler injections painful?

The injection site may be numbed using lidocaine injections or topical creams to reduce any mild discomfort.  In addition, using Tylenol, acetaminophen, 30 minutes prior to the procedure, if it is approved by your doctor, may help alleviate discomfort during the procedure.  The procedure itself feels like a splinter or needle prick, but if done properly, the pain should go away right away. Lips may swell a little for a few hours after the procedure. Swelling may worsen on day 2 then mostly subside by day 5.  All swelling should be completely gone by week two.
